These are often the early signs of gum disease also known as Gingivitis.

Gum disease if left untreated is a silent but progressive disease which can result in permanent bone loss around our individual teeth, which is known as Periodontal Disease.

5 common signs of Gum disease:

1.Bleeding on brushing or flossing.
2.Halitosis commonly known as bad breath.
3.Gum recession.
4.Hard yellow-creamy coloured deposits of tartar (scale /calculus)behind your lower front teeth.
5.Loose or drifting teeth.

If any of the following medication or health issues effect you (shown on the list below) they could make you more susceptible to Gum Disease:

1.Heart problems.
2.Diabetes.
3.Take medication for epilepsy or high blood pressure.
4.Those on high doses of steroid medication.
5.Those under going chemotherapy or radiology treatment.
6.Pregnant women.
7.Those who have suffered from a stroke.

Top tips to maintaining healthy gums:

1.Use the correct toothbrush 2 x day. The toothbrush must be suitable for your mouth, as not everybody will benefit from the same toothbrush!
2.Cleaning spaces/gaps between our teeth daily every evening with either dental floss or the right sized interdental brushes.
3.Using the accurate techniques to remove plaque deposits(soft harmful bacteria) that stick to our teeth. Brushing and flossing is not always a set method, as some of us have more crowded teeth, dental bridges, crowns, bulky or uneven fillings and in some cases dental implants, often causing plaque and food traps in our mouth!
4.Using a more specialised mouthrinse or toothpaste that is formulated for bad breath or gum disease . Many retail mouthrinses and toothpaste’s will only disguise bad breath temporarily and are not strong enough to kill all the harmful bacteria present in our mouth, despite their claims!
5.Visiting your Dentist every 6 months and Dental Hygienist every 3 to 6 months, on a regular basis is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain or improve your oral health. These are the Dental Experts who can give YOU tailor made advise to help maintain a healthy mouth and enhance your confidence and smile!
