Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog shares what he learnt about obtaining consent from a patient considering botox treatment.

Keep extensive notes – whatever comments and discussions were had with the botox patient, must all be written down.

Carry out a capability assessment – is the botox patient in the right frame of mind and state to understand the procedure and are they capable of giving consent for the botox procedure.

Has the decision to undertake botox been a voluntary one? Were they pressurised by a family member or friend? Were they given a gift voucher? You need to explore that the botox patient has decided for themselves and have not been influenced by any external factors.

Has informed consent been obtained?

For consent for botox treatments to be informed, it needs to include the following:

  • the risks and downsides of botox has been discussed and understood
  • the benefits of botox treatments has been discussed and understood
  • alternatives to the botox procedure have been offered – even if the practitioner does not provide those alternatives to botox
  • material information has been provided – any unique or significant information related to that specific botox patient has been assesses and taken into account of
