Dr. Harry Singh explains why using dermal fillers in the lips should not leave you looking like Daffy Duck.

We’ve all seen the pictures online and in magazines – the pouts, the selfies, the young ladies with the over-inflated lips that give rise to expressions such as ‘trout pout’, ‘duck lips’, or ‘sausage lips’. Driven by reality TV stars and social media trends there has been an upsurge in the demand for lip fillers, particularly amongst the millennial generation; but many are simply going too far with their requests for an unnatural look, and I’m here to say ‘no, this is not what lip enhancement is about’.

Practicing from my clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, I can say, hand on heart, that less is more when you’re looking to enhance someone’s lips with dermal filler products. A natural augmentation should not be overtly obvious or distort the lips, and all enhancement should be achieved as a gradual process, reviewed over time. Having been practising in facial aesthetics for over 15 years, I pride myself on delivering natural lip augmentation for all adult ages, both women and men.

I use HA or hyaluronic acid-based products from the Restylane range, which has been clinically proven for over twenty years and has a great safety and efficacy record. Restylane is non-animal-based, all the products are temporary and are formulated to be very similar to the natural HA that is produced daily in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid is the body’s natural moisturiser, it loves water so will draw it in, which is why it’s important that we keep our bodies hydrated by drinking plenty of water. The HA molecules fill up like sponges and help to plump up our skin, but as we age we don’t make as much of the HA naturally, so skin becomes less voluptuous.

The only real difference with the synthetic HA is that the clever scientists who make these products manufacture them in such a way that they last longer when implanted into the face than natural hyaluronic acid. This means that when we use them to augment the lips, recover lost volume through ageing or reshape any asymmetries between the upper and lower lips, we can expect the results to last between 6 and 12 months. Over time your body will simply metabolise the Restylane, making it a safe and effective solution for lip enhancement. You can add to and maintain your new look simply by returning to the clinic for regular appointments.

Many people worry about the pain involved with lip filler treatments. The lips are a very sensitive part of our face, with lots of nerve endings. But fear not, anaesthesia or numbing is at hand. We can use a topically applied local anaesthetic cream, or a dental block, just like the injection that you might have for a dental procedure; I am a dentist after all. Having said that though, dermal filler products these days come with built-in local anaesthesia, through the addition of lidocaine to the syringe, making treatment very comfortable. This means that a little bit of numbing cream on the lips beforehand I start injecting is all that most people require for a comfortable experience.

Results will be almost immediate, but you should expect some minor side effects for the first few days – remember what I said about lips being sensitive – this may include slight bleeding at injection points immediately after treatment and swelling or mild bruising for 24 to 72 hours, sometimes longer. All of this is temporary and will quickly resolve to reveal your new luscious lips. Allergic reactions or major complications to lip fillers are rare, and most of the scare stories you may read in the press are related to poorly trained practitioners using incorrect treatment techniques.

If you want to discuss if lip fillers are the right treatment for you, then please call 0800 006 2266 to book and appointment to see Dr. Harry Singh at Aesthetics in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.
