Dr Harry Singh explores the treatment options available to define and contour the perfect jawline using dermal fillers, the puppet face lift and anti-wrinkle injections

If you look in the bathroom mirror and the image staring back at you appears to be that of a ‘sad-looking’ face, complete with wrinkled, sagging or lax skin, then I hate to break it to you, but these are all signs of ageing.

That naughty gravity has an annoying habit of sending everything in a southerly direction as we get older. With our face, this means that as wrinkles start to form, volume and elasticity is lost, and this all heads in a downwards direction. This creates marionette lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and a loss of the chiselled, angular line of the jawbone which becomes shrouded with loose skin and small fatty deposits called jowls. The effect of ageing hits both men and women, and ultimately definition is lost along the jawline, but thankfully we have a range of medical aesthetic treatments at Aesthetics in Stevenage, Hertfordshire which can recontour, build volume, redefine and provide lift to the lower face, restoring a more youthful aspect and the jawline you always wanted.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal or soft tissue fillers are a great treatment for adding volume, filling depressions, folds, lines and wrinkles, as well as creating shape and structure, which is exactly what we want to achieve when redefining the jawline.

Using a non-animal, hyaluronic acid gel, which is a temporary injectable gives the best results. I use the Restylane® range which are available in different gel thicknesses for different actions such as volume building or contouring shaping. Restylane has a safety record going back over 25 years meaning that it has one of the largest documented histories of clinical studies. As a dentist and Aesthetic Practitioner, I have been carrying out treatments with Restylane since 2002 and love the flexibility that the products such as Lyft, Volyme and Defyne give me to define, volumise and hydrate the jawline. The best thing about it is that hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our own bodies, which we produce daily. As we age though, we produce less of it, which leads to the loss of hydration in our skin and deeper tissue. By making hyaluronic acid into differing gel thicknesses, which last for 6 to 9 months, in some case 12 months, we can rebuild what ageing is taking away. The Restylane products also come with added lidocaine which is a local anaesthetic, meaning that every injection is comfortable.

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin, most commonly known as Botox®, is a prescription only medicine which can be used to treat lines and wrinkles on the face, but also has many other applications which are less familiar to most people. I use a brand called Azzalure®, and it can be used to treat various areas of the lower face to help bring back jawline definition. Because it’s a prescription only medicine, you will need to come to a face-to-face consultation with me, so we can discuss if you are suitable for treatment. Azzalure can be used to reduce activity in the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO) which drags the corners of the mouth downwards towards the chin, in the chin itself to reduce a so-called ‘scrotal chin’ whereby an over-active chin muscle creates dimpling. It can also be in the masseter or chewing muscles to stop teeth grinding, and to soften a square or wide jaw, which is often unattractive in a female.

Silhouette Soft Threads

Addressing volume loss and overactive muscles will have a significant effect on reshaping the jawline, but to really achieve a long-lasting result against gravity, we need to consider treatments which offer a lifting action. One of the best for this is the Silhouette Soft Thread Lift, sometimes referred to as a puppet face lift. Silhouette Soft threads are made from Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) with small cones made from lactic and glycolic acid along their length, separated by knots. These cones are therefore free-floating and bi-directional, acting as little hooks and anchors when the thread is placed into the skin and pulled upwards into position. The PLLA has a stimulatory effect in the skin over time and this makes the body produce new collagen to support the lift, even after the original thread has been dissolved by the body. This is a great lift for younger women who are not ready for a surgical face lift and will last 18-24 months.

If you’re concerned about the lack of definition in your jawline, then you can come in for a consultation with me, Dr Harry Singh and we can discuss if cosmetic injectables such as Restylane, botulinum toxin injections or Silhouette Soft threads are the right solution for you.
