Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog talks about why he baby steps the amount of botox he gives.

Whenever I see a patient for the first time, that has never had botox treatment, I will always under dose with the botox.

There are a number of reasons why I prefer to reduce the botox dose on the initial visit. Firstly I do not know how strong the muscles are. Contrary to popular belief, the number  and depth of wrinkles or ;lines does not indicate how strong the muscle is. I have had a number of botox patients with very deep wrinkles, but they only require a small dose of botox to reduce or eliminate these lines. Alternatively I have had a few botox patients with very fine lines, but due to the muscle being strong, they have required a larger dose of botox.

I can only judge how strong the muscle is when it reacts to the botox injection. If you have a weak muscle, then over dosing with botox will give you a frozen look. Once we understand how strong your muscle is, then we can determine the correct botox dose for you.

Secondarily, if we over treat with botox in certain muscles, it may cause the eyelids to droop down. Once this happens it is virtually impossible to correct. So its a much safer practice to under dose with botox initially and then build up the botox dose over a number of visits.

It may be annoying to come back for botox top ups, but this is the best and safest way of avoiding the frozen look and reduces the chances of your eyelids drooping down.
