Dr Singh who runs his botox clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in his latest blog shares his thoughts on the gummy smile and botox.

Gummy Smile and Botox®
What is a Gummy Smile?
A gummy smile is when a person is smiling and a more than the normal proportion, around 2mm off the gum shows above the upper teeth. In this situation you may find people covering their mouth when they laugh or smile.
Those that suffer from Gummy Smile may benefit from Botox® injections.
What is Botox® or Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum Toxin is a purified protein and the injections are extremely safe. The practitioner uses a fine needle and a very small amount of Botox®, which is then injected into a targeted area of the muscle or muscle groups to cause temporary muscle relaxation. The actual procedure will take just five to ten minutes and involves a small number of injections.
How does Botox® work?
Botox® works by injecting the ends between the nerve and the muscle to relax the muscle fibres. This treatment is reversible, in time, when the Botox® toxins are broken down and removed by the body.
How can Botox® injections correct a Gummy Smile?
Botox® injections offer a non-surgical, non-invasive, safe and approved procedure to temporarily correct a Gummy Smile. To see the full benefits of having a Botox® injection will take a couple of week (14 days) after the initially treatment, however the effects will last between three to four months (this can vary between individuals). Having a Botox® treatment is quick, effective and convenient to administer.
This treatment will need to be repeated every three to four months.
What are the side effects if any?
It is normal to have a few small raised bumps and redness at the injection site; this will subside after about 20 minutes after the treatment taking place. Bruising at the injection site may occur however this will resolve quickly.
