Correcting a weak chin with dermal fillers

Dr. Harry Singh explains how dermal filler products can be used to treat a recessive or weak chin and improve the overall appearance of the face.

The chin is an important, if often overlooked, part of what makes a balanced facial shape. The relationship between the eyes, nose and chin has been defined in a standard of beauty known as the ‘golden ratio’, based on the mathematical principles of Phi. Put simply, if the chin isn’t how we would expect it to be, it can really make a difference to the appearance of the whole face because the mathematical balance is lost.

Having a weak or recessive chin is very common, in both men and women, and unless it is an extreme malformation – affecting speech or eating – it is generally a cosmetic concern which can be easily addressed with non-surgical, cosmetic solutions, using dermal fillers. Cosmetic improvement in this way can help to restore self-confidence about one’s face.

Having a strong jawline is an attractive feature, in both men and women, but for some the chin doesn’t protrude far enough away from the face, appearing small or sunken back, and affecting those golden ratio beauty lines between the nose, lips and chin. A small chin can often mean that there is no clear definition between the chin and neck which can also make the mouth and lips appear oversized.

Although a minor genetic phenomenon, or a result of injury, the appearance of the chin and jawline can be enhanced by building volume and definition both in the point of the chin and along the jawline or jowl area, to increase its prominence and bring the face back into balance.

At my clinic in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, I like to use temporary hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that offer a safe, cosmetic solution to this concern. I’ve been administering fillers to patients for well over fifteen years now and in that time have learnt and perfected advanced techniques such as chin contouring.

Using the Restylane range of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel fillers, which have been clinically-proven for use as cosmetic tissue fillers since the early 1990s, I have a range of different gel thicknesses which means we can build volume and structure where we need it with thicker products, and then define and contour the final shape of the chin and jawline with softer, thinner types of the HA gel.

Hyaluronic acid is made naturally by our bodies every day and is a key component of our skin, attracting water and keeping skin hydrated, with a plump and youthful look. Implantation of synthesised, non-animal-based HA products, like Restylane have also been shown to stimulate the body’s own collagen formation. Restylane will build a support structure which can be added to with repeat treatments every 6 to 9 months, whilst also giving the body a helpful nudge to lay down new tissue in the area to naturally enhance and improve the chin.

Restylane products come with added lidocaine so treatment is comfortable due to the local anaesthetic. They are also temporary, meaning they are fully metabolised by your body over time. This is much better than the solution of old for chin augmentation where either permanent dermal fillers or surgical chin implants made from silicone were used.

The amount of correction needed to improve your chin will determine which Restylane products we use, as well as how many syringes are required to achieve the desired result. Maintenance treatments will be recommended to keep the correction and improvement to your chin.
